Our CFO asked for a board pack on regional revenue with three days’ notice, while I was in the middle of month-end. I listed everything he’d asked for and asked him which three charts the board would actually discuss. He picked three; I built those properly first and put the rest in an appendix with simpler tables. I told the finance team month-end would slip by half a day, and why. The pack went out on time, the board used those three charts, and month-end closed half a day late as planned.
A customer found that our invoice export timed out for large accounts two days before their year-end. I profiled the query that evening and found it was scanning every invoice line. I added two indexes and rewrote the query to page through results, tested it against a copy of their data, and deployed it the next afternoon with the on-call engineer watching. The export went from timing out after 60 seconds to finishing in 4, and the customer closed their year on time.
Mistakes to avoid
- Heroics without planning (“I just worked all night”).
- A deadline you missed without saying what you learned.
- Leaving out how you communicated with others.
