How to Answer “Tell Me About a Time You Showed Leadership”
“Tell me about a time you led a team or a project through a difficult period.”
Why interviewers ask it
The interviewer wants to see how you set direction, support people and make decisions under pressure. You don’t need a manager title: leading a project, a shift or a change counts.

During a flu outbreak our ward was three nurses short on nights for two weeks, and I was the senior nurse on shift. I reorganised the allocation so each nurse had a mix of acuity rather than one person getting all the heavy patients, set up two short check-ins each night so no one was left struggling, and escalated to the duty manager with the numbers, which got us a pool nurse for the worst nights. We had no missed medications or falls in that fortnight, and two of the newer nurses told me afterwards it was the first time nights felt manageable.
When we launched a new billing system, tickets tripled overnight and the team was overwhelmed. I set up a triage rota so urgent billing errors were picked up first, wrote five saved replies for the most common questions, and met the product team daily with the top issues so they could fix causes, not just symptoms. The backlog went from 900 tickets to under 100 in two weeks, and our satisfaction score recovered from 71% to 88% within the month.
Mistakes to avoid
- Talking about “we” so much the interviewer can’t tell what you did.
- Leadership as giving orders, with no mention of people.
- No result, or a result without numbers.
